A segment of the original Jules Rimet World Cup trophy has been found in a basement at FIFA's headquarters in Switzerland.

The trophy was initially used at the first World Cup in 1930 before being gifted to Brazil for good in 1970 when the country won their third title.

However, the trophy was stolen in 1983 from a bullet-proof cabinet at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters and has never been re-discovered.

The piece that was found in the FIFA basement is the original base of the statue, as the trophy, which is named after former FIFA President Jules Rimet, had been given a new base in 1954.

That original base contains the names of the first four World Cup winners and will now be displayed at the FIFA museum.

The museums creative director David Ausseil told Associated Press that: ""We think no FIFA president has seen it since Jules Rimet himself. It's like finding an Egyptian mummy. You can't put a price tag on it because it's family jewels."
