UEFA has stripped St Petersburg of the hosting rights for the 2022 Champions League Final and Paris will now stage the decider on May 28th.

European club football's marquee game will now be held at the Stade de France in the French capital.

UEFA's decision came after Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday.

The governing body has also confirmed that Russian and Ukrainian clubs and national teams competing in UEFA competitions will be required to play their home matches at neutral venues until further notice.

The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play Ukraine in a Nations League match in Lviv on June 14th.

In a statement announcing their decision around the Champions League relocation, UEFA said:

"UEFA wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to French Republic President Emmanuel Macron for his personal support and commitment to have European club football’s most prestigious game moved to France at a time of unparalleled crisis.

"Together with the French government, UEFA will fully support multi-stakeholder efforts to ensure the provision of rescue for football players and their families in Ukraine who face dire human suffering, destruction and displacement."

Paris last hosted a Champions League Final back in 2006, when Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1.
