At a delicate time for elite athletics, Sebastian Coe is stepping into the prestigious role of President of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

The British former Olympic middle-distance champion has to face down a number of challenges including the issue of doping which is looming over the sport at present.

Owen Gibson of The Guardian joined us on Off The Ball about Coe and Ger put it to him that it must be untenable that the former London 2012 Organising Committee chairman can hold the IAAF presidency and a global ambassador role with Nike at the same time.

"I don't know how he can maintain that global advisory role with Nike and be President of the International Association of Athletics Federations. The two just don't go together. I think he'll have to ultimately relinquish that role, although he was very prickly about that when he was asked about it in his press conference," Gibson agreed, before discussing the challenges of doping regimes on a global scale.

Addressing that Gibson said: "The nature of these organisations where their culture makes it difficult to imagine them ever taking that ultimate sanction of saying, 'you're out for a defined period of time because your culture is not conducive to clean sport' and if you have an independent unit, which is truly independent and is able to wield that ultimate sanction then you have a chance of scaring them into some sort of action. Without that, they're always going to call the bluff of the organisation they're so embedded in."
