Vinny Corey has joined his Clontibret clubman Dessie Mone in announcing his inter-county retirement with Monaghan.

Mone has played for sixteen seasons with the Farney County, having made his debut against Carlow at Dr. Cullen Park in February of 2004 whileCorey made his debut a year earlier

Mone confirmed his decision with the briefest of tweets, saying he had 'no regrets'.

Mone and Corey won their seventh Monaghan County titles with Clontibret in October, the sixteenth in all for the club.

The news of Mone and Corey's retirements will come as a blow to the recently re-appointed Monaghan manager Seamus "Banty" McEnaney.

Speaking to the Independent's Donnchadh Boyle in October, Mone said he was leaving the door ajar for another year with Monaghan, "The last few years I have always just seen how the club season goes first and make sure the body is right and if I'm fit to do it.

"We are going to be involved in the Ulster club now so total focus is on the club at the minute and I'll chat to the Banty in a couple of months or so."

After beating Crossmaglen Rangers in the Ulster quarter-finals, Clontibret fell to a 0-12 to 0-9 defeat to Naomh Conaill of Donegal which likely sped-up the decisions of both Mone and Corey

Both were part of the Monaghan sides that won Ulster Senior Football titles in 2013 and 2015.

In 2018, Corey started and Mone came off the bench as Monaghan played in a first All Ireland semi-final in 30-years.

Their club have also paid tribute to the Farney stalwarts saying, "Both were the backbone of the Monaghan defence and indeed attack on so many of our great days and will long be remembered in the annals of Monaghan football.
