Sycerika McMahon ended her campaign today at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Spain with a new Irish Senior Record in the 100m Freestyle Heats. McMahon touched home first in Heat 4 of the event in a time of 56.19 knocking Clare Dawson’s 2009 record of 56.32 from the books.

“It was a really fun swim, just to go out there and do the 100 Freestyle, not an event I’d usually swim, it felt good and I’m happy with the result” said McMahon who will now depart for Texas later this month to take up a swimming scholarship with Texas A&M.

Fiona Doyle was also in action this morning, the 21 year old who finished 11th overall in the 100m Breaststroke earlier this week, finished just outside her Irish 200m Breaststroke Record of 2:30.21 in a time of 2:30.49 to secure a top 20 place in the World.

“20th is a lot better than I thought I would have been” commented Doyle “the 200 (Breaststroke) is a learning curve for me, I’m not really a fan of it, but I just have to go back and see what I can do to make my time faster, I think within the next year it’s definitely going to improve from where it is.”

The Portmarnock SC swimmer still has the 50m Breaststroke to go and is looking forward to her final event of the Championships saying “I’m really excited about the 50 Breaststroke, I’m currently ranked 10th , I would love to get in to another semi-final and then to see where we can go from there.”

At the US Open in Irvine, California, Andrew Meegan continued his good form making another A Final, this time in the 400m Freestyle. The Aer Lingus swimmer finished 6th overall in the Final in a time of 3:55.95. Nicholas Quinn and Dan Sweeney were also in Finals action in the 200m Breaststroke, both recording personal best times to progress from the heats in the morning. Swimming in the B Final, Sweeney posted the faster time of the two to finish 2nd and ranked 10th overall in 2:14.99 while Dan Sweeney was 15th overall in 2:15.60.

Barry Murphy will be the only Irish swimmer in action at the World Championships tomorrow. Murphy will swim the 50m Freestyle heats, an event in which he is the current Irish Record Holder in 22.14 seconds set in 2009.

There will be no further press release today. The next release will issue tomorrow following Day 6 Heats at the World Championships and Day 3 at the US Open.
