Rory McIlroy is reportedly due to sign a 10 year endorsement deal with Nike worth $250 million. The contract, if worth the reported sum, would be the most lucrative endorsement contract in the history of any sport, dwarfing deals for superstars such as David Beckham, LeBron James, Derrick Rose and Tiger Woods.

McIlroy"s current endorsement deals expire at the end of the year, making him the most sought after sponsorship deal in sport as his clean cut image, well spoken, intelligent manner and potential for sporting domination make him a good bet for companies hoping to attach their brand to a sports person. In the wake of major Nike brand ambassadors Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong being disgraced there is a need for a safe, clean bet upon which to stake the company’s public image and Rory is seen as the perfect fit for what Nike needs.

McIlroy"s deal would dwarf all previous deals, for Nike or any brand. Derrick Rose currently holds the world"s most expensive deal. The Chicago Bulls point guard has a deal with Adidas that is reportedly worth $200 million over 14 years however if the reported figures surrounding McIlroy"s deal turn out to be accurate the 23 year old from Co. Down will become sport"s most expensive man.
