In recent years, many players who started out in the League of Ireland have made a home for themselves with the senior Ireland set-up like Wes Hoolahan.

But what is rarer is players still plying their trade with domestic clubs who get call-ups to the Ireland squad.

Stuart Bryne's believes Dundalk left-back Dane Massey is a player who could be looked at in future with a view to being capped as he told Off The Ball tonight on our weekly League of Ireland slot.

But while Roddy Collins recognises Massey's strengths, he does not think it would work.

"Stuey, I agree with you on his talent and his ability. I don't agree that it's possible to step up from League of Ireland with the opportunity he has at the minute into international football," he said.

"I do believe he's good enough to play in England and I've recommended him to a few clubs. If he went and played Championship football - I think he'd be capable of that after a couple of months training - and progress from there, I think he can definitely step up to the mark."

The lads also reacted to the news that SSE Airtricity League clubs will get more prize money in the Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds from next season and what that really means for the league, including Roddy's point that there is a risk of a gap growing between the top and bottom.

They also talked about the early pressure on Sligo Rovers and manager Owen Heary.
