Chelsea have lost their second game of the season as Newcastle emerged 2-0 winners from the day’s early Premier League kick off. The Magpies provided what is sure to be a major talking point on the day when all eyes looked towards the evening tie between early league leaders Arsenal and Liverpool.
Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy were the scorers for Newcastle, with both goals coming in the second half. Gouffran’s opener came as the Frenchman got on the end of compatriot Yohan Cabaye’s free kick into the Chelsea box.
Remy added a second in the 89th minute when Vurnon Anita dribbled into the Chelsea box before laying it off for the Frenchman to fire in off the post.
Eden Hazard had a chance to level the game moments before Remy's goal but sent the ball wide from a shot inside the Newcastle area. John Terry struck the Newcastle bar after just 15 minutes with a header but the final result was a just reward for a fine Newcastle performance.
Before any other games are played Chelsea drop one place to third, falling behind Liverpool on goal difference. Newcastle meanwhile rise to ninth, level with Manchester United but behind the reigning champions on goal difference.
