Liverpool have denied claims made in The Sun that the club is once again for sale. The paper claims the Fenway Sports Group, which bought the club from Tom Hicks and George Gillett in 2010 – have “unofficially” made the club available, and have attracted interest from the Saudi Aramco oil and separate interest from two, as of yet unnamed, American billionaires.

However, the Anfield club has denied the story, saying: "Fenway Sports Group has made its position clear, Liverpool Football Club is not for sale. There is no truth in this story."

The Sun claims the failure to qualify for the Champions League, coupled with close to £200 million spent on players, has pushed the club’s American owners to the point that they want out. This accusation has been strenuously denied by the Fenway Sports Group, with a spokesperson telling The Guardian: "Like so many rumours in the past about a sale of Liverpool Football Club, there is absolutely no truth in this. We have had no meetings with anyone about a sale, we don't know who the source of the rumour is, and any suggestion of a sale is fabrication."
