Lee Westwood says he doesn't feel comfortable playing golf tournaments at the moment and he won't be at next month's US PGA Championship.

The European Tour made its full return after just over four months in hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic and the atmosphere was very different with no fans present.

Westwood had a disappointing end to the event he was hosting, finishing the British Masters at Close House on eight over-par. The former World number one admits he's struggling for motivation and thinks other senior golfers will be feeling the same.

“The Tour and Close House have done an amazing job,” he said. “When we turned up on Monday I was surprised how thorough everything was.

“I knew we were going to be on lockdown but the testing protocol we have all been through has been a success. I don’t think anybody has tested positive so hopefully they will carry on next week.

He added: "In 28 years of playing on Tour, this is a shock to the system, isn’t it?

“It’s just not the life I’m used to. I go out on the golf course and I am struggling for motivation a little bit. There is a lot more to consider.

"You can see someone who's eighteen, nieneteen or Twenty coming out, brilliant. It wouldn't be so much of a shock to the system but I’m too old in the tooth for that now. I was talking to Lee Stattery, out there. He's been on tour 18 or 19 years and he says 'yeah, it feels a bit weird this.'

“But I feel like I should play in a few of the UK Swing events to support the European Tour because they have done such an unbelievable job of putting on these tournaments.”

The British Masters was won by Italian, Renato Paratore who carded a final round 69 to finish at 18 under, three shots ahead of Dane Rasmus Højgaard.
