Kauto Star has been put down after breaking the left side of his pelvis as a result of a fall yesterday.

The 15 year old, retired almost three years ago and was seen as one of the leading chasers of his generation. He was best known for winning two Gold Cups at Cheltenham in 2007 and 2009. After finishing second in 2008 to stablemate Denman, Kauto Star became the first horse to regain the Gold Cup.

Kauto Star won more than half the races in competed in, including five King George VI Chases at Kempton. He won the five races with Ruby Walsh on board. He was the most successful horse in the races history.

Speaking to the Racing Post, owner Clive Smith said of his devastation; "The vets made him comfortable but it became evident that it was serious, and the kindest thing was to euthanise him. It was a horrible moment. He was such a wonderful horse, but he did not suffer."
