Pat Kenny has launched a new weekly podcast on life and politics in the United States called The Divided States of America.

With the midterms fast approaching, there are many theories as to how the remainder of Donald Trump's presidency will go.

The Republicans are expected to take a hit during the elections, which will see citizens vote for the US House of Representitves and about 33 or 34 of the 100 seats in the US Senate.

Speaking on Pat Kenny's new podcast, The Divided States of America, was former White House Advisor in the Obama Administration, Brett Bruen, who said that "Trump will have lost a lot of his political strength" if the results go as expected.

He said: "We're going to see the Republican Party itself go through a transformation.

"Republicans in the next Congress may not toe the line in the same way that they have over the last two years because Trump will have lost a lot of his political strength and he will be a lame Donald Duck.

Pat Kenny went on to ask if America can be trusted as President Trump has "walked away from the Paris Accord, the Climate Accord".

He continued: "We know what happened with the Iran nuclear deal, his dissing of the United Nations, international law generally he feels doesn't apply to America.

"I mean, has sort of a veil been lifted on America and that America, people will say going forward, is simply not to be trusted."

Mr Bruen replied: "Well, there is no going back. It happened in the first Trump term. It has certainly worsened in the second term.

"And so for me, we have to begin to look at a world in which America is a diminished power. We will remain a strong, even a superpower.

"But, and this is where I think Ireland plays a critical role, we are going to need stronger alliances in 2028 and going forward.

"You know, the old model of how the US interacted with Europe is going to no longer be reliable.

"But what does that new model look like? And that is where I think we need to focus."
