Johnny Depp has said his latest film The Lone Ranger may be one of his last.

He told the BBC: “I wouldn’t say I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away."

The Lone Ranger’s huge budget of $250 million (€188m) had a hard time surpassing or even matching that figure at the box office, earning just $164 million (€124m) in its four weeks since release. The film was plagued by criticism that Depp’s character, the Native American Toto, should have been played by an actor with Native American heritage.

The star of the Disney’s hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean series and countless other successful films explained why it could be time for him to call it a day.

“When you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year and you realise that you've said written words more than you've had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as an insane option for a human being."

Depp had previously told Rolling Stone that he planned to quit the profession at some point.

But his retirement is still a ways off; Depp has already signed on to a 5th Pirates installment and is rumoured to reappear as The Mad Hatter in a sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland.
