John Giles: Liverpool will have to let Balotelli 'nuisance' go

It's got to be a drastic change for Liverpool this summer. They've got to get rid of their transfer committee system altogether and let Brendan Rodgers do what I believe he should be doing, which is judging the players and buying the players.

He has been part of the six man committee and it's a very difficult job for him to do.

The manager should be in charge and he should be allowed to be in charge, so maybe the owners are getting a bit of sense and about to give Rodgers the tools to do the job.

He hasn't had the tools in the last two years. The Balotelli affair for example, I don't think Rodgers wanted to buy Balotelli but he was one of six and some of the others probably thought it was a good deal because they were getting £16M and he'd gone for £25M before. In business terms that would be a good deal.

Or it appeared to be a good deal. For Brendan Rodgers, it's a very difficult decision because he is one of six and when they signed Balotelli if he wanted to say 'I'm not in agreement with that, I don't want him', he cannot do that - well, he can but he would be out of a job straight away.

He had to go along with it and he went along with it because he had to go along with it. But I don't think he ever really believed that Balotelli was the man for him.

Balotelli is running out of clubs and I don't think anyone would pay £16M for him now. He went from £25M down to £16M and where does he go to?

If he goes for nothing, somebody will take a punt on him for his wages. But from Liverpool's point of view, I think they've got to let £16M go because he's doing nothing there. He's a nuisance there and it was a very bad buy because you don't buy in trouble. You sell trouble and wherever he's been, there's been trouble.

He's been trouble at AC Milan. Mourinho, who is a very good man-manager, said he was unmanageable when he was at Inter Milan and that's a few years ago.

And he has never justified the high fees with the reputation he has. When do you see a great player being sold around. Managers don't sell great players; they keep them as long as they possibly can unless they have to sell.

It's a dilemma but I think they will have to let him go because he has done nothing for Liverpool and I don't think he will.

John Giles was speaking on his Thursday Night Football slot on Off The Ball from 7.30pm every week.
