Top jockey Johnny Murtagh has announced that he is to retire from riding in order to concentrate on his training career.

The 43-year-old has split his time between riding and training this season, but has now decided to focus on his work in the training paddock.

After landing his first winner in 1987, Murtagh went on to win three Derbys, four Irish Derbys and five Gold Cups during a stellar career.

"I didn't ride a horse until I was 15 and it's been fantastic, but it's now time to move on to the next chapter in my life," he confirmed.
