Shay Given could have been forgiven for thinking he was the forgotten man at Villa Park.

But suddenly the former Ireland goalkeeper was back in the limelight today as he was sensationally promoted to a temporary assistant coach role at Aston Villa alongside Gordon Cowans.

It comes after two of manager Paul Lambert's assistants Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa were suspended by the club for unspecified reasons.

The upheaval comes at a delicate time for a club which is hovering a little too closely to the relegation zone. That has also been compounded by the loss to injury of star striker Christian Benteke who will not appear again this season.

Tonight we were joined by the Daily Mirror's James Nursey to talk about a worrying time for the club.

"Karsa and Culverhouse were not popular with the first team squad or with members behind the scenes and Lambert's been under pressure to make some changes and has been keen to try and shake up his regime," said Nursey, who believes both men will definitely leave because of their alleged behaviour.

Both men followed Lambert from Norwich and that throws his future into doubt, although Nursey does not think the Scotsman is under threat in the "short term", with the situation to be revisited in the summer.

Nursey also discussed the transfer policy change that Lambert is hoping to make this summer, assuming he stays on and also discussed the future for owner Randy Lerner who has become increasingly distant.

As for Shay Given's rise to the coaching staff after being largely frozen out under Lambert, Nursey admits today's announcement was a "surprise".

"But I have spoken to people at the club today and they are saying Shay's very well respected in the dressing room, he's a good talker, he's vastly experienced. They feel that the Villa dressing room is a bit quiet and it'll be even quieter now that they're losing two coaches. So they're getting Shay in there apparently as a real motivator," said Nursey.
