"I knew the shot was extraordinary".

Those were the words of Christy O'Connor Jnr when he spoke to Newstalk Breakfast in 2012 about his 2-iron on the 18th hole of The Belfry on the Sunday of the 1989 Ryder Cup.

O'Connor was facing Fred Couples in the Sunday singles and won the match 1-up to guarantee that Europe would retain the Ryder Cup. The matches finished 14-14.

"It went my way. It could have gone his just the same. It was a pity really, a draw would have been incredible. There was never more than 1-up, 1-down, all square the whole day".

He told Newstalk Breakfast how the shot was not a one-off fluke. "I re-opened the golf course with Lee Westwood and Prince Andrew some years later. Prince Andrew offered £50,000 to charity if I hit the 2-iron onto the green within 20 feet. I hit it into about 15 feet and he put that money up for charity".

RIP Christy O' Connor Jnr. Here's the shot that helped secure the 1989 Ryder Cup for Europe.
