There was disappointment for two Irish internationals in the Championship last night.

Both Millwall and Wigan Athletic have been relegated to League One putting the futures of David Forde and James McClean in doubt at the clubs.

Galway native Forde has played at The New Den since 2008 and has been Millwall's vice captain in recent seasons.

The goalkeeper was dropped for Ireland's international last month against Poland in favour of Aston Villa's Shay Given and may feel he has to move back to The Championship to stay in Martin O'Neill's plans.

Wigan's difficult season came to its inevitable conclusion last night also after Rotherham defeated Reading to stay in the divison.

James McClean only jonied The Latics at the start of last season when the side were relegated from the Premier League but has qualified for the Europa League courtesy of their historic FA Cup win.

McClean's decision may seem more straight foward than Forde's if the Derry native's previous quotes are to be believed.

Speaking to the Irish Times before the Poland game last month, McClean said:

“I’m no different to any player, I’ve got an ambition to play at the highest level and League One ain’t that. If we stay up or go down, you never know what’s around the corner in football. You never say never. We will just have to assess it come the end of the season, regardless.”

Martin O'Neill will hope that both players move back up the football pyramid this summer.
