The annual International Women's Day is being celebrated throughout the world today.

Various events are being staged to mark the occasion, including protests and 'social strikes' in relation to abortion laws in Ireland.

This is also a day to recognise the achievements of some of Ireland's female athletes.

2016 was a year in which Ireland's Annalise Murphy redeemed herself with a silver medal finish at the Rio Olympics. Meanwhile, the Cork ladies footballers collected a sixth consecutive All-Ireland senior title - their 11th in 12 years.

This year we look to Ireland hosting the Women's Rugby World Cup and just this week, our national women's football team topped their group at the Cyprus Cup.

Here's how some of Ireland's female athletes are honouring International Women's Day:

'Ah yeah, it's a nice colour Michael!' Happy International Women's Day. #Throwback #BeBoldForChange
