Irish boxing legend Wayne McCullough - who won Olympic silver in 1992 and is currently living in Santa Monica - says the Irish competitors should be treated as heroes upon their return.

Newstalk's reporter Henry McKean caught up with the former Olympian in Los Angeles.

McCullough has been based in the US for over 20 years and works as a gym trainer, though he returned to Ireland three years ago to carry the Olympic torch as it passed through the country.

He spoke about the success of Conor McGregor, and even offered to spar with the interim-champ if he has the time. McCullough suggested that had it been around in his day, UFC would have been an attractive option:

"I definitely would have went to the UFC - you can actually hold someone and hit them at the same time. In boxing, when some one runs away, you cant hit them."

A complimentary Henry asked what his secret was to look so well at the age of 45 - regular exercise, says McCullough.

Yesterday was another magic day at the Special Olympics in LA.

On day six, 37 medals were won by Team Ireland including 8 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze.

That brings our overall tally to 70 medals.

Among the wins was gold for Donal O'Mahony from Kilcoole, Co Wicklow in the Pentathlon.
