77-year old Jim Walpole was visiting Toronto with a tour group when he suddenly slipped outside King Edward Hotel during a casual stroll. He fell against scaffolding which cut into his throat, and blood began pumping out.

Malkovich - who is performing in a play in the Canadian city - was reportedly smoking a cigarette nearby and rushed to help Walpole. He was quickly joined by other passers-by and the hotel doorman, who called emergency services.

Malkovich. meanwhile, reassured Walpole while applying pressure to the neck wound. According to the Toronto Sun, the retiree said "I owe them all my life, but the first guy really seemed to know what to do.”

Malkovich - best known for films like Dangerous Liasons and the surreal Being John Malkovich (where characters find a doorway that gives them access to Malkovich's mind) - is not the first film star to have saved the day for real.

Harrison Ford, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman are among the recognisable faces who have been on hand to help trapped or injured people. Joaquin Phoenix has recounted how he was helped from his car after an accident by German director Werner Herzog. Ryan Gosling, meanwhile, was caught on video breaking up a street fight in New York in 2011.
