Former World number one Tiger Woods has confirmed he will not play in next month's US Open at Oakmont.

Woods was expected to play in the event as he had registered to compete in the event, last April, despite his agent Mark Steinberg admitting the move was "simply procedural".

The 40-year-old has not played a competitive of round of golf since the Wyndham Championship last August. Since then, Woods has undergone back surgery.

On Tuesday night, the three-time US Open champion confirmed that he was to miss the year's second major through a statement released on his own website.

"While I continue to work hard on getting healthy, I am not physically ready to play in this year's U.S. Open and the Quicken Loans National. I am making progress, but I'm not yet ready for tournament competition."

Woods hosts the Quicken Loans National, in a tournament that benefits his Foundation. Despite not competing, he will still be expected to attend the event, just outside Washington.

The US Open begins at Oakmont next week. It is the first time since 2007 the course has hosted the event. Jordan Spieth begins the tournament as the defending champion.
