Ray Houghton would know a thing or two about scoring iconic goals for Ireland and the ex-Boys in Green midfielder says Shane Long should prepare for plenty of adulation for decades to come after his match-winning heroics against Germany last night.

Houghton joined us on Off The Ball tonight to reflect on yesterday's famous night and he is in no doubt about what's in store for Long.

"He's going to be remembered forever. It's going to be one of those occasions where people come up to him in 20 and 30 years time and say 'I remember where I was the day you scored against Germany to win that match' and there will be about 150,000 fans who will say they were in that stadium that night," he said.

Houghton also picked out Ireland midfielder James McCarthy as his standout player of the match.

"James McCarthy was the man of the match for me. I thought he was absolutely outstanding. That's the best I've seen James play for Ireland. He was playing in a deeper role which suited him," he said, adding that it's the same role which suits him at Everton in front of the back four.

Houghton also shared his impressions of our next opponents Poland, analysing their performance in their 2-2 draw with Scotland last night, adding that there is a "huge burden" on the Poles because they are at home on Sunday.
