TV shows such as Homeland, 24 and Spooks are glamorising torture, according to human rights campaigners.

Amnesty International says almost a third of people in the UK believe showing such scenes is sometimes necessary.

They say that torture has become almost normalised by its glamorous portrayal in shows such as Homeland.

The global survey of 21,000 people in 21 countries also revealed a widespread dread of the practise, with 44 percent saying they feared being abused if they were taken into custody.

Yet over a third percent of the respondents said they believed torture was sometimes necessary and acceptable to gain information that may protect the public.

Loretta Rosales  was tortured in the Philippines in the 1970's for leading a series of national strikes.

She says the media must be more responsible:

Michael Fassbender spoke about the subject of violence in films as he had to act out a torture scene in 12 Years A Slave.

He thinks the film industry has to be careful when portraying violence:

In the past five years, Amnesty says it has recorded incidents of torture in 141 countries, including 79 of the 155 signatories to the 1984 UN Convention against Torture.

The human rights group is launching a new campaign aimed at ending torture.
