Former Ireland defender Gary Breen feels Tottenham's away record has not been good enough to match their ambitions this season.

Spurs beat Southampton at home to continue a brilliant record at White Hart Lane during the 2016-17 season. They are unbeaten at home in the Premier League and sit second, 10 points off leaders Chelsea.

But away from North London, Mauricio Pochettino's side have won just four times.

Breen was part of the Newstalk commentary team on Sunday at White Hart Lane and shared his thoughts with Dave McIntyre.

"Tottenham now have to start picking up wins away from home and they haven't got as many as they should have done," he said.

"But certainly in terms of bringing any team to White Hart Lane, they've been so dominant. They'll identify a Champions League finish, yes, trying to run Chelsea right to the wire but I'm sure they'll be looking at Chelsea for that FA Cup as well."

But on the away record, the ex-Ireland defender feels it has been the difference in having a good season and really making a fist of the title challenge.

"To be second in the league with only four wins away from home all season is not good enough. And you'll argue, yes, they've only won three games but they're drawing too many and that's the difference and the problems that they're having. They look so strong at times today and Southampton did so well to stay in the game. But there's just that little bit of a vulnerability there when they are defending crosses, they look like they're going to concede. Why opponents don't identify that more... it's easier said than done of course because they're so dominant and don't allow you to get into those situations. But if you want to find a weakness in that back five, of which Tottenham have been rightly lauded in being so strong, it is in defending crosses."
