Former Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise was on his way back to Alesund in Norway on Tuesday night with his daughter when he was forced to swerve off the road.

Riise's agent Erland Bakke confirmed the news to Norwegian outlet Dagbladet: "He drove her home to Alesund, and just before they arrived, something on the road caused John Arne Riise to quickly turn left, and drive into the road rails.

"Both are well under the circumstances, they will remain in the hospital until this morning."

Emergency services arrived on the scene following the incident and said the car was not drivable.

However, there were no major injuries sustained by either Riise or his daughter and both have since been released from hospital.

Sindre Molnes of the Police in Møre and Romsdal said: "We have some idea of what has happened, but we must first hear from those involved.

"One car involved, located on the side in the middle of the roadway. Two people in the car, both are out and conscious. Unknown extent of damage. Emergency vehicles on the road."

Riise spent seven seasons at Liverpool between 2001 and 2008 and was part of their Champions League winning team in 2005.

The 39-year-old also won the FA Cup and League Cup before going to play with Roma and Fulham.
