The iconic No 13 shirt is up for grabs now that Brian O'Driscoll has retired. But his Leinster team-mate Fergus McFadden would prefer to be considered for the wing.
The Ireland and Leinster man, who picked up a medial ligament tear against Toulon at the weekend, was at the Sugar Club with Off The Ball tonight and told the lads and audience that the wing is where he would like to lay his foundations.
"I've had that conversation with Joe [Schmidt]. The last couple of years before he went with Ireland, the majority of my rugby with him in the bigger European games were on the wing. It's probably where I played my better rugby under Joe. I had the conversation with him before he took over as Ireland coach and he was looking at me as a winger," McFadden revealed.
"I knew that in my head so initially in November I started the first two games and things were going well for me there. I got injured, then I got back in as a substitute and I was covering the centre and the wing. Ideally, he is looking at me as a winger."
McFadden, who also revealed that he will be on the sidelines for 4 - 6 weeks, also spoke about the moment when he came on for O'Driscoll in the latter's final home game at the Aviva.
McFadden famously published a tongue-in-cheek tweet that got tens of thousands of retweets and favourites after the game:
That standing ovation I got coming off the bench yesterday was amazing #Thanks
— Fergus McFadden (@fergmcfadden) March 9, 2014
"The standing ovation was obviously for Brian and the least he deserves but I was just looking forward to getting on and making an impact. But obviously coming on for any other player, there's never been that kind of noise. It was a great reception for him and he's been an unbelievable servant," he said.
The 27-year-old Kilkenny-born player also discussed Leinster's Heineken Cup campaign and the home advantage and refereeing in the competition.
