The £27 million summer signing requires surgery on a wrist injury and is unlikely to return before December.

The Belgian midfielder sustained the injury in last week's champions league game with Shaktar Donetsk in Ukraine.

Meanwhile United are stepping up their efforts to tie down his fellow Belgian Adnan Januzaj to a long-term contract.

United are believed to have offered him a lucrative £60,000 per week deal.

The 18 year old winger's current deal expires at the end of the season, with a number of top European clubs thought to be interested in luring him away from Old Trafford.

Little progress has been made despite discussions with the player's representative ongoing for several months now.

Januzaj got both goals in United's 2-1 Premier League win at Sunderland on Saturday, sparing the champions a third consecutive defeat.
