Dublin football manager Jim Gavin has called on the GAA to get even tougher on incidents of racism in our national games.
The Playing Rules Standing Committee have suggested that racist acts will result in an instant dismissal for the offender with an eight-week ban to follow and proposals will go before the Association’s Congress at Croke Park this Friday
Speaking to Off the Ball in an interview to be broadcast on this Saturday’s show, Gavin says the eight-week ban should be extended to twelve-months.
He told us: "It’s a very positive step that we’re tackling racism. We’ve such a multi-cultural community now on the island and the GAA has opened it’s doors to people from all different backgrounds. I think we could take it a step further.
"The proposed suspension for players, I don’t think is strong enough. If we really want zero tolerance we probably need to ramp that up to 12 months."
Listen to an excerpt from the interview below and tune in from 2pm this Saturday to hear the full extended interview with Jim Gavin and Off the Ball’s Ger Gilroy.
