Dele Alli has been issued a three-game UEFA suspension, after being sent off against Gent last month.

The Tottenham player was dismissed for a challenge on Brecht Dejaegere in the Europa League tie, meaning that if Tottenham secure Champions League football next season, Alli will miss half of the group stage campaign.

The punishment was handed out in order to send out a message of a zero tolerance approach to challenges, such as the one Alli committed on Dejaegere.

Alli apologised for his tackle in the 40th minute of their 2-2 draw (3-2 agg.) at Wembley stadium, a result which saw Spurs crash out of the competition.

Dejaegere appeared to foul Alli moments before the red card incident, that left the Belgian with a bloddied shin.

Referring to Alli's apology, Dejaegere said:

"He just said sorry to me and that's nice from him, he's a pro. It's football. I saw the images and it could have been much worse. I don't think he meant it because he came to apologise himself.

"At half-time I felt pain in my knee and also someone showed me the image and then my heart was thumping for a few seconds."
