Darren Clarke and Paul Dunne have endured a tough day on course on Day 1 of the Tshwane Open in South Africa.

Dunne ends the day on 2-over after shooting a 72, while Clarke hit a 3-over par round of 74.

There is a three-way tie for the lead, with France's Gregory Havret, Hayden Porteous of South Africa and Alexander Sweden's Bjork all on 6-under.

They are one clear of five challengers who have finished the opening round on 5-under. That group includes Finland's Miko Korhonen.

England's Graeme Storm, who recently beat Rory McIlroy in a dramatic playoff on the same soil at the South Africa Open in January, is further back on 3-under.

Further back, Dunne managed four birdies but this was overshadowed by six bogeys with setbacks on the 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes.

He will tee off his second round at 6am Irish time (8am local time) on Friday.

One shot further back, Clarke double bogeyed the 1st and 4th holes and aside from birdies on the 9th and 10th, struggled on course.

The Northern Irishman will tee of his second round 10.10am Irish time.
