Stoke City have signed Darren Fletcher from West Brom on a free transfer.

He has signed a two year contract after his deal at the Hawthorns expired.

The Scotland midfielder has been a regular starter for Albion over the past two years, and was made captain by head coach Tony Pulis.

Fletcher cited his new Stoke manager Mark Hughes as a key factor in his decision to move.

"I liked what was said in the discussions I had with him, his ideas and his philosophies - it is just a great new challenge for me," he said.

"The gaffer was a fantastic player, and I have had the pleasure of working under some tremendous managers throughout my career, and Mark will be another one of those.

"He is an impressive man who has had a really impressive career in the game, and I am really looking forward to working under him every day."

He also cited international team-mates like Charlie Adam and ex-United defenders Ryan Shawcross and Phil Bardsley as players he knew personally prior to the move, as well as Saido Berahino who he played with at West Brom.
