Republic of Ireland defender Cyrus Christie has responded to criticism he received from Derby County fans for comments he made about his self-belief.

The Derby player claimed that he is among the best full-backs in the Championship, in an interview with the Irish Sun.

"I feel that I’m one of the best full-backs in that league and, on my day, I think I am the best," Cyrus said during the interview which was based on his uncle Errol, a prominent British boxer in the 1980's.

Christie has struggled with injury this season, and has earned just two starting appearances since Gary Rowett was appointed manager at the club earlier this year.

He added that he is willing to adapt his game under the new manager, but fans of the club did not agree with his self-assessment.

Christie has published a response to the criticism, saying that he was astonished to read abusive comments from fans of the club.
