Carlingford Lough has taken home the big prize at the Punchestown Festival.

The John Kiely-trained 10-year-old was a surprise winner of the Punchestown Gold Cup after the more fancied contenders in the field were disappointing performers.

Sent-off at odds of 12/1 under jockey Barry Geraghty, Carlingford Lough surged clear of Djakadam in the final furlong after front-runner Road To Riches suffered a heavy fall at the last.

The first Grade 1 race on today's card was the Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle, which saw the 2-to-1 favourite Bellshill claim victory by half a length.

The opening race today saw 16-to-1 shot Shamiran capture the Martinstown Opportunity Hurdle for the third time in his career, while the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle was won by Woodland Opera for trainer Jessica Harrington.
