UEFA have announced that the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff is to host the 2017 Champions League final. It will be the first time Wales host the final and the fifth time since 2002 that the final will be held in Britain. Wembley, Hampden Park and Old Trafford have all hosted the final in recent years.

The showpiece event has been scheduled to take place on June 3rd of that year. Two nights beforehand the Cardiff City Stadium will host the Women's Champions League final.

The news will come as a boost to the Welsh FA, after they missed out on hosting matches at Euro 2020. The Cardiff City Stadium held the UEFA Super Cup in 2014 as Real Madrid defeated Sevilla 2-0.

Later this year, the Millennium Stadium hosts games at the Rugby World Cup, including two of Ireland's pool matches. It has also been one of the host venues for the football tournament as London 2012.

Reports began circulating in Berlin earlier this month at the Champions League final, that Cardiff was to host the 2017 event, before being confirmed today.
