Manchester United have fallen to their second successive league defeats at home for the first time in over ten years. Newcastle took all 3 points from Old Trafford with a 1-0 win and a display that will serve to increase confidence in Alan Pardew’s men and further heap the pressure on David Moyes.

United looked devoid of ideas in the first half and Newcastle matched them, and more, for the most part with a well organised defensive offering. Ultimately Moyes’ side were left frustrated by the defensive banks of yellow shirts as Newcastle hung on to take a memorable win that lifts them to sixth and leaves United firmly in mid-table, now within reach of Aston Villa who could conceivably drop United to tenth with a win from their game with Fulham tomorrow.

The decisive goal came in the 61st minute just as United looked like they were asserting themselves on the game. Moussa Sissoko made his way to the byline before cutting the ball back into the box where Yohan Cabaye was on hand to steer it across the goal and past David De Gea.

United pushed for the equaliser from that point on, sending Anderson and Wilfried Zaha into the game shortly afterwards, with the latter making his Premier League debut. Antonia Valencia would later come in to replace Rafael but no matter what positive moves Moyes made from the touchline there was to be no breaching of the yellow wall.

Robin Van Persie saw a headed goal disallowed for offside and that was to prove the closest United would come to a goal.
