Chelsea fan Richard Barklie has been handed a five-year footballing ban for racially abusing a black man on the Paris metro.

Barklie was in a group of Chelsea fans that were filmed during the incident in Paris back in February.

The 50-year-old former member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and Police Service of Northern Ireland officer insisted his work with disadvantaged communities in Africa and India and his human rights work undermined any suggestion he was racist.

But Judge Gareth Branston at London's Stratford Magistrates' Court said Barklie "proved to be a menace" and had "demonstrated aggressive, disorderly conduct" while joining in the racist chanting.

Trouble flared in February as the fans made their way to the Champions League match against Paris Saint Germain.

The group were alleged to have pushed and sang racist songs at the man attempting to board the train.

Josh Parsons, 20, has been banned for five years after demonstrating 'xenophobic hostility' when Souleymane Sylla was pushed off the subway train.

Jordan Munday, 20, was also banned for three years due to 'damning' footage of the incident given in evidence against the group.

Mr Sylla, the man at the centre of the incident, gave testimony to the court that he was "violently" pushed off the train as a fan pointed to his skin colour.

A chant was also heard, featuring the words "We're racist, we're racist, and that's the way we like it."
