Penalty shoot-outs are also a time of tension and pressure. Not only for the players but also for the throngs of fans watching.
Brazilian fan, Rafael Gambarim, was watching his team go up against Chile in a penalty shoot-out on Saturday.
Gambarim and his two cousins embraced and jumped for joy when Brazil saved a penalty.
But this joy soon turned to anger when the screen turned to show Chile player Sanchez who had scored in the first half.
"I was annoyed because he scored (Chile's first-half) goal against Brazil, and when he missed, I was elated. When they showed him I said 'Take that boy!'" Gambarim told news portal G1.
There were also still at least six penalty kicks remaining to decide whether Brazil advanced to the quarter finals so Gambarim said tensions were still running high.
