Boxing's future as an Olympic sport is under major threat after being left off the initial list for the 2028 games.

The provisional list for Los Angeles was approved earlier today in Beijing by the International Olympic Committee.

Boxing is Ireland's most successful sport at the summer games.

Other sports to miss out include Modern Pentathlon and Weightlifting.

Organisers indicated boxing could yet be included, but it must resolve governance issues.

They say it could be added to the revised list next year if the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) has “successfully addressed the ongoing concerns around its governance, its financial transparency and sustainability, and the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes”.

Michael Conlan's bout at the 2016 Games in Rio was one of those subject to an independent investigation last year.

It concluded that his loss was as a result of bout manipulation - with several other fights also found to have been manipulated.

Amongst the sports provisionally added to the list include Skateboarding, Sport Climbing and Surfing.

Football's future could be affected by changes to the international calendar, however.

The IOC has indicated that mooted changes to a biennial World Cup could see the sport lose its status at the Olympics.

"We would like to discuss together with the FIFA President and IOC member but this is not possible now against the expectation, because he cancelled his visit to Beijing the day before yesterday," IOC President Thomas Bach said.
