Sam Allardyce has been confirmed as the new manager of Sunderland.

The successor to Dick Advocaat has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

He takes over with the Wearsiders second bottom of the Premier League, having claimed only three points from their opening eight games.

Allardyce played for the club in the early 80s, and he formerly managed their big rivals Newcastle.
