David Beckham has moved a big step closer to forming a football club in Miami.

A group led by the former England captain has secured the purchase of land to build a new stadium there.

Beckham was given the option to own a Major League Soccer franchise as part of his contract when he played for Los Angeles Galaxy.

The building of a new venue still needs to be approved by the US city.

According to the Miami Herald, three acres of land were sold for $9 million (approximately €8 million).

As of 2017, there are 22 franchises in Major League Soccer due to the additions of Atlanta United and Minnesota United ahead of the current season.

Miami would become the second franchise based in the state of Florida with the Orlando City team having started out in MLS back in 2015.
