Barcelona have honoured Irishman Patrick O'Connell in an official ceremony at the Nou Camp.

The club's former manager between 1935 and 1940, O'Connell brought the club on a fundraising tour of matches on the other side of the Atlantic at a time when the Spanish Civil War raged back home.

That tour helped wipe away Barca's debts and kept the club afloat on a path which has eventually led to every major trophy in the game.

Ahead of last night's 4-0 win over Sevillan side Real Betis - another club the Dubliner managed - Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu, Betis officials, members of the Patrick O'Connell foundation and his grandson, Mike, remembered the former Ireland international and Manchester United footballer at the ceremony.

O'Connell, who passed away in London in 1959, led Betis to their only La Liga title in the 1934-35 season.
