Are we about to see the glory days of the late 1980's and early 1990's return to Serie A?

Italian football journalist James Horncastle spoke to Off the Ball last night about how the big five clubs of Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Roma and Napoli have spent big this summer. 

Juventus have reinvested their money from the Champions League last year to strengthen their squad after Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal left this summer to play in MLS and the Bundesliga respectively.

Horncastle added the the Milan clubs have also spent money at a similar level to Juve, despite the lack of Champions League football. AC Milan have spent big money in all departments including buying former Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca, while Geoffrey Kondogbia has joined Inter Milan from Monaco with Roberto Mancini making big changes to his squad since he returned in November last year.

The spending spree at Inter has meant many players have had to leave including Xherdan Shaqiri, and Horncastle feels that no league can compete with the Premier League. He feels that players of Shaqiri's level may now regularly move to the Premier League clubs of Stoke City's level, hoping to impress and get a move to a large club
