Adam Nolan crashed out of the boxing world championship in Doha as he was beaten by European champion Eimantas Stanionis in a very tight bout.
The Wexford welterweight was edged out on a split decision and the 2012 Olympian battled through to the end despite a slow start.
After losing the opening round, he claimed the second and the momentum remained with the Garda heading into the decider.
A strong showing saw him level the fight on one card, but the other two judges had him slip behind. The final scorecards read 29-28 and 30-27 in favour of Stanionis, with the remaining card 29-28 for Nolan.
This is only the second defeat for an Irish boxer in the championships, Dean Walsh the only other fighter to lose on Tuesday.
