12 Years a Slave and Gravity swept the board at the 2014 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards on Sunday night.

Gravity won the most awards, six altogether, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron and Best British Film. But 12 Years a Slave took Best Film as well as Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, reports Collider.

Chiwetel won the Bafta rising star award seven years ago. He seemed overcome as he accepted his award from Uma Thurman, and thanked director Steve McQueen.

“I'm so deeply honoured and privileged," he said, according to UK newspaper The Guardian. "Thank you for you work, your artisty and your passion in this project … to make it of such value, of such worth. This is yours by the way – I'm going to keep it, that's the kind of guy I am, but it's yours."

Cate Blanchett won Leading Actress for her performance in Blue Jasmine. The 44-year-old dedicated her award to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died earlier this month.

Cate spoke of his "monumental presence" and "your monumental talent, your generosity and your unflinching quest for truth not just in art but in life. You raised the bar continually. Phil, buddy, this is for you, you b*****d, I hope you're proud."

Other big winners were American Hustle with three awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence over 12 Years a Slave’s Lupita Nyong’O.

While Steve Coogan is thrilled to have won best adapted screenplay for Philomena.
