The Republican Party held the first debate of the 2024 United States presidential contest last night.  One high-profile candidate who was not in attendance was former president Donald Trump, who is set to surrender at a county jail in Georgia later today on racketeering and conspiracy charges over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state.
