An oral exam for English at the Leaving Cert could be an “absolute disaster” one teacher has warned.

A draft plan for reform of the exam could see students asked to engage in a “two-way communication” about a book or a play for 20% of their final grade.

On Newstalk Breakfast, English teacher Conor Murphy said the detail would be important.

“It very much depends on how this is designed,” he said.

“[It should be] a discussion - and not a question and answer.

“A question and answer [type of exam] would be a disaster… where you go in with prepared answers etc.”

Any change would impact students sitting the Leaving Cert in 2028.
