New figures from the department of education show that the age of junior infants starting school has been steadily increasing for the past 20 years. In Ireland children don’t legally have to attend formal education until they’re six, however, they usually start around four or five. However, this is still quite young by European standards. In most countries, children don’t start school until six or seven with seven often seen as being the optimal age. Do Irish children start school too early? To discuss we spoke to Dr. Mary O’Kane, Lecturer in Psychology &  Education.
