A pay increase for councillors has again been pushed back yet again.

There are reports today that the Government has delayed granting local councillors a 50% pay increase due to fears of a public backlash.

A memo on the pay rise was due to be brought before Cabinet today. It followed on from a 2019 government recommending that councillors’ pay be increased by €8,000.

Currently Ireland’s 947 local councillors earn just over €17,000 a year.
