Where did life begin?

Was it in a pond of goo in a volcanic valley? Perhaps near a hydro-thermal vent at the bottom of the ocean?

Wherever it started, the evidence suggests that it was here by about 4 Billion years ago.

But could Earth have caught life rather than evolving it? 

Gary Ruvkun is a Molecular biologist and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School.
